So. Boston Waterfront Transportation Center

Completed in 2018, the award-winning South Boston Waterfront Transportation Center (SBWTC) is a new multi-level, multi-user parking facility located on a portion of Massport’s Core Block parcel in the Seaport District.

Designed by Fennick McCredie Architecture, the 500,000 sq. ft. garage was built over the I-90 tunnel structure and was designed to both fill a need for additional parking spaces and provide a user experience that is integrated into the fabric of the South Boston Waterfront District.

The project incorporated sustainable and resilient design elements. Sunrise’s scope included the furnishing and installation of curtainwall, storefront, doors, glazing, ACM, and CW louvers.

This project was particularly unique due to the louver fins — 678 of them in all, supplied by Metalwerks — each engineered with threaded rods and yokes to stabilize against harsh winds and tied back to the building with knife plates and T brackets.

Boston Public Library

A Copley Square landmark, the Johnson building addition to the Central Branch of the Boston Public Library reopened to the public in 2016 following a three-year, $78 million renovation project.

Designed by William Rawn Associates, the renovation called for the removal of the granite plinths that covered the building’s windows, creating an inviting, light-filled space that reconnected the building to the street. Other highlights of the project included a revamped lecture hall, a new innovation center and hi-tech community learning center, an enlarged fiction section and new ways of book browsing, a state-of-the-art Welcome Center, digital imaging suite, and an enterprise retail space that blends seamlessly with the library.

Sunrise’s scope of work included the installation of an all-glass curtainwall system with all-glass vestibules supplied by Sentech Architectural Systems; fabrication and installation of structural steel perimeter attachment system and stainless steel perimeter cladding; and installation of corrugated metal and aluminum composite panels.

Shrewsbury Public Library

This award-winning library renovation project, completed in 2016, consisted of expanding the original 1903 Howe Memorial Library in Shrewsbury with a modern addition that complemented the existing historic architecture.

Sunrise’s scope on this 32,000 sq. ft. project included exterior pre-patina copper composite rainscreen wall panels and custom metallic finish aluminum composite rainscreen ceiling panels installed with thermally separated primary furring.

MassDOT Research & Materials Testing Lab

Completed in 2016, this partial one- and two-story, 47,180 sq. ft. facility in Hopkinton functions as the new home of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Central Research and Materials Testing Laboratory, replacing the original laboratory in South Boston.

The primary function of the facility is to perform sampling and testing of materials used on highway and bridge projects. The facility also contains storage rooms, training and conference rooms, and various mechanical rooms.

Sunrise’s scope included work on the façade, panel install, and storefront.

Ethelbert Cooper Gallery

Opened in the fall of 2014, the newly established Ethelbert Cooper Gallery features contemporary and historical exhibitions and installations of African and African American art. A beautiful addition to Harvard University, the gallery was designed by renowned architect David Adjaye.

Sunrise’s scope included custom laminated structural western cedar curtainwall mullions with high-performance temper laminated insulated glass.
